Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away in the early hours of Monday in San Francisco at 73. A prolific composer, his illustrious career is adorned his hall of fame with several accolades – including two Grammy Awards, titles and lost of respect. He was bestowed with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri in India for his extraordinary contribution and impact in the field of music globally.



Hussain died due to complications arising out of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), according to his family. He had been hospitalised for the last two weeks and was later taken to the ICU as his condition deteriorated. What is IPF, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis? Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and progressive lung disease characterised by the thickening and stiffening of lung tissue.

This scarring, or fibrosis, leads to a decline in lung function over time, making it increasingly difficult for the patient to breathe. The term ‘idiopathic’ means that the cause of the disease is unknown or un explained, which can make diagnosis and treatment challenging. While the exact cause of IPF remains unclear, several factors may contribute to its development: The symptoms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis can be subtle at first and may worsen over time.
