Pune: The family of a 25-year-old doctor, who was declared brain dead after a road accident in Solapur's Umarga, donated his organs which went on to help three people in Maharashtra . Officials said the doctor was on his bike when he was hit by a Karnataka state transport bus on Sept 13. Umarga is a town near the Maharashtra-Karnataka border.

"As per our information, the doctor was riding the bike with his brother on the pillion seat. He was declared brain dead on Sept 17, and by Wednesday noon [the next day], the organs that were fit for transplant were sent to Pune," said Sandip Patil, hospital administrator and transplant co-ordinator at the Chandan Neuro Sciences Hospital in Solapur. A liver, both kidneys and one cornea were among the organs sent to different hospitals in Pune.



"One of the kidneys and the pancreas were transplanted into a 39-year-old male patient in Baramati. Another kidney was given to a patient from Ravet. And the liver was transplanted into a 38-year-old man from Chakan," said Aarti Gokhale, coordinator, Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC).

The doctor's cornea was deposited with the Solapur eye bank. Officials said this was the year's 50th deceased organ donation for the Pune ZTCC..
