Sony has made it clear that there are no hidden extras to hero shooter Concord and that it doesn’t even have a battle pass. Not only did PlayStation 5 and PC exclusive Concord attract a lot of criticism during its unveiling but the recent open beta doesn’t seem to have improved its reputation, with extremely low player numbers on Steam – that have been easily eclipsed by fellow hero shooter Marvel Rivals . The fortunes of live service games can change quickly and often though, and developer Firewalk Studios is trying to emphasise that Concord does do things differently, with the revelation that it doesn’t have a battle pass.

That’s almost unheard of amongst modern live service games, even as publishers are increasingly criticised for the way they use them, such as EA getting into hot water over attempted changes to Apex Legends . In the aftermath of the beta, Firewalk has published a series of tweets answering common questions about the game, but in a separate post animation director Mark DeRidder offered the following: ‘No Battle Pass, folks. You own Concord, Concord doesn’t own you.

’ ‘We wanted to focus our attention on making Concord a rewarding and robust experience on day one, where just playing the game, levelling up your accounts and characters, and completing jobs yields meaningful rewards,’ reads the full tweet. No Battle Pass, folks. You own Concord, Concord doesn’t own you.

Despite that being exactly how Helldivers 2 worked, many have voiced disquiet at the decision and the battle pass revelation seems to be an attempt to emphasise the game’s value for money and the fact that there are no hidden extras outside cosmetic DLC. The main posts state that there will be a lot of free additions after launch, including new cut scenes, new playable characters, and new maps and modes. Despite not having a battle pass the game’s post-launch content will still be organised into seasons, you just won’t have to pay for anything. Whether this was always the plan or something that’s been decided in the wake of the beta’s muted reception is unclear, but it’s certainly a different approach to the norm. That’s not necessarily how you’d describe the game itself though, which is a blatant clone of Overwatch , but it is at least a more competently made one than Marvel Rivals, whose beta is currently still in progress.
