Many smaller cities in India have started sending out vans to take the passport application process to the people, instead of forcing them to travel to the far-off passport offices from remote areas. Applicants residing in notified areas may visit the camps to submit their passport applications. These are in addition to the 93 Passport Seva Kendra outlets and the 428 post offices that are used to process passport applications.

The mobile vans handle the application process, including the verification, at people's homes or establishments. " Only applications for fresh issuance or re-issue (except lost/damaged) of passport under normal scheme can be submitted at the camps," the website said. The vans don't process Tatkaal , police clearance certificate and other types of applications.

Dehradun started the trial on September 30. "People living in remote areas face problems in reaching the passport office. Our aim is to make it available to those people.

However, it is still at the trial stage. Five appointments will be issued online daily from the system. If successful, it will be taken to remote areas by contacting the concerned officials," Regional Passport Officer Vijay Shankar Pandey told Local 18.
