Hooton Roberts, one of Yorkshire's smallest villages with a population just over 200, is reputed to be the most haunted, according to local stories. The village boasts several listed buildings including the Earl of Strafford public house, a former manor house, and a 12th-century church. Alongside these historic structures are chilling tales of hauntings, strange occurrences, and even objects being hurled across rooms.
There are whispers of a girl being 'possessed' by an evil spirit. Charlie Schofield, a campsite owner, operates a family-friendly site that features a vast camping field, children's play area, an outdoor bar, and even fairground rides. Hooton Lodge Farm campsite, located in a beautiful wooded area on the village outskirts near Rotherham in South Yorkshire , is a favourite among motorhome users and campers.
The site, which hosts various events including a big meet-up for VW enthusiasts called Dub Odyssey in the summer, is also licensed for weddings. Charlie, who manages the site with his wife Charlotte, takes great pride in the campsite and its facilities. Since taking over in 2012, they have invested around £500,000 into it.
The couple resides in an old house on the site dating back to the 1700s, which has served as a pub and B&B in the past. Charlie casually mentions that the house was haunted until he had it 'blessed'.
