Even if it lost the animated Emmy, the first season of Marvel’s “X-Men ’97” series remains arguably the most acclaimed work the studio has released in years. Even with the controversy surrounding former showrunner Beau DeMayo’s firing, anticipation remains high for the show’s second season. Well, that anticipation may have to wait a bit longer.
A new report from (via ) claims that the second season of the series won’t be returning to the streaming platform until 2026. DeMayo’s writing commitments towards the second season were completed before he was let go. After that news broke, Matthew Chauncey was announced as the new head writer for the third season.
Today’s report claims that Chauncey is apparently reworking the drafts that DeMayo penned before being dismissed, and so the delay is due to the changes being made to the story and scripts. “X-Men: The Animated Series” executive producers Larry Houston and Eric and Julia Lewald will reportedly remain in their roles as consulting producers, and the main voice cast are also expected to return. Disney+ already has a full Marvel Animation slate in 2025 with “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” “Marvel Zombies” and a third season of “What If.
