Tuesday, August 20, 2024 On the evening of August 18, 2024, the vibrant and culturally rich 2024 China Leshan, Mabian Yi Ethnic Style Carnival, alongside the 8th Xiaoliangshan Torch Festival Gala, took place in Leshan, Sichuan, China. This event offered both local residents and international visitors a dazzling display of Yi ethnic culture, showcasing the unique charm and traditions of the Yi people. The festival atmosphere was electric, with joyful music filling the air as attendees gathered around the roaring bonfire.

Dressed in splendid traditional Yi costumes, participants danced the Dati, a traditional Yi ethnic dance, in a show of grace, passion, and vitality that captivated everyone present. The Torch Festival is one of the most significant traditional celebrations for the Yi ethnic group, known for its deep cultural roots and spiritual significance. Often referred to as the “Carnival of the East,” this festival has been passed down through generations, retaining its vitality and importance over the centuries.



In addition to the torch-lighting and dance festivities, the Xiaoliangshan Torch Festival featured a variety of other cultural events, including the finals of the “Menghuo Dasi” (a Yi dialect term meaning “young male god in Mabian”) wrestling competition, an embroidery display, and the “Border Town Carnival.” The festival highlighted the rich heritage of the Yi people, providing a cultural feast for all who attended and further establishing Leshan as a key destination for those interested in exploring the diverse traditions of China..
