FOR six-years, members of t he Women's Institute in Mold, Flintshire, have hand-knitted and crocheted items for premature babies across the UK. Made by the Mold members, items such as jackets, blankets and hats have been sent to 'Needles & Hooks Angel and Preemies' (NHAP), a non-profit organisation and group of knitters wanting to make a difference. NHAP accept requests from other organisations, such as the Women's Institute, and sends them to over 200 hospitals and maternity units in need.
NHAP also supports various children's hospitals, children and adults with cancer, the homeless, dementia patients and children and adults with brain injuries. The two criteria are; no items must be yellow in colour as it can disguise jaundice, and nothing with holes or lacy patterns to prevent babies from getting their fingers caught. Items made for the premature babies are used in the hospital wards and are later sent home with families.
