Pune: A woman's torso , with all her limbs chopped off , was on Monday morning found from the Mula-Mutha riverbed in Kharadi, police said on Tuesday. "We are in the process of ascertaining the woman's identity. Somebody used a sharp weapon to cut her legs, shoulders and head before throwing the torso into the river," deputy commissioner of police (Zone IV) Himmat Jadhav said.

"There is an old bridge at the spot, and work at an under-construction site is on along the banks of the river. A man from the area spotted the torso floating in the muddy water around 11.30am and raised an alarm.

A team from the Chandannagar police station reached the spot and pulled out the torso from the water," the DCP said. The police team sent the torso to Sassoon General Hospital for autopsy. Jadhav said, "Preliminary report suggested that the woman was not sexually assaulted.

It is not yet known who killed her and for what reasons. The Chandannagar police are investigating how the body reached the spot." The police suspected that somebody had killed her, cut her limbs and threw the body in the river water to destroy the evidence.

"We will also search for her body parts," Jadhav said. The river currently has a strong water current because of the recent heavy rainfall. "We have contacted other police stations in the city, Pune rural, Pimpri Chinchwad police and the Govt Railway Police (GRP) to check if they have registered any missing person's complaint," he said.

A case for offences under sections 103 (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered with the Chandannagar police station in connection with the crime..
