A woman died after she was hit by a vehicle near Killeen High School on Wednesday morning, police said. The Killeen Police Department released a statement around noon saying that officers were dispatched to the scene at 38th Street and Atkinson Avenue. Officers found a 66-year-old woman lying in the roadway with severe injuries and began life-saving procedures until fire department paramedics arrived.
She was taken to the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in critical condition. According to the statement from police, she succumbed to her injuries and the hospital staff pronounced her deceased at 9:26 a.
m. The preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was walking in a crosswalk going west on 38th Street when a gray Ford pickup truck who had been going north on Atkinson Avenue tried to turn north onto 38th Street but struck the woman before completing the turn, police said. The name of the victim has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
