HARTSVILLE — Hundreds of people lined the tarmac and fields surrounding the runways of Hartsville Regional Airport on Saturday to take in the sights and sounds of the second annual Wings over Hartsville Fly-in/Air Show and Car Show. "What a beautiful day," said Sen. Gerald Malloy, for whom the airport's recently renovated terminal is named.

"It's amazing to see so many people out here to visit this beautiful airport." Malloy helped procure the $1.7 million in state funding that paid for the renovations.

He said Saturday that state and federal funds have been acquired to extend the airport's 5,000-foot runway. With the sun shining overhead and a fall breeze in the air, visitors checked out dozens of light aircraft, from Cessnas to Pipers. Youngsters had a chance to climb into the pilot's seat in aircraft and imagine soaring through the sky.

The air show included a jet demonstration, a spot landing competition, a flour bomb competition, and demonstration by the Gooney Birds RC Club of Florence. During the flour bomb competition, visitors who signed up for the contest rode as passengers on a flight and dropped five-pound bags of flour from hundreds of feet above the ground in hopes of being the closest to a target. Along with the air show, which was presented by RiseAero, the Eastern S.

C. Mustang Club sponsored a car, truck, and bike show. The show drew 60 entries of numerous makes and models.

There were 50 trophies presented in 25 classes as well as a Sponsor's Choice Award. Numerous food trucks were on hand to provide concessions. Get local news delivered to your inbox!.
