Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur didn’t just shake up the gangster genre in Bollywood; it flipped the entire table, sending bullets and expletives flying in every direction. Released in two gritty, gunpowder-scented parts, the films not only carved out a bloody niche for themselves in Indian cinema but also launched the careers of its stellar cast like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj Tripathi into the stratosphere. Since then, fans have eagerly awaited the announcement of Gangs of Wasseypur 3, hoping to dive back into the chaotic world of gang wars and coal mafia.

But if you’re holding your breath for the third instalment, you might want to exhale slowly and prepare for disappointment. In a candid interview with The Lallantop, Anurag Kashyap made it clear that he has absolutely no interest in creating a Wasseypur universe. No spinoffs, no prequels, and definitely no sequel.

“Nahi aayegi. Mujhe koi Wasseypur universe nahi banana,” he said, with the finality of a judge handing down a life sentence. He went on to explain that while every corner of the entertainment industry is busy slapping the word “universe” on anything that moves, he’s more interested in telling a variety of different stories.

In other words, don’t expect him to hop on the universe bandwagon anytime soon. "Businessmen alag sochte hain. Har cheez ka universe bann raha hai na aaj kal.

Mujhe kuch nahi banana. Mujhe apni bohot saari alag alag filme banani hain. (No, it won’t come.

I don’t want to create a Wasseypur universe. Businessmen have a different way of thinking. Everything is being turned into a universe.

I am not chasing that. Instead, I want to make a different variety of films and tell different stories),” he said. Kashyap didn’t stop there.

He doubled down with a dose of dark humor, saying, “Wasseypur 3 uss din banaunga jis din langda lula ho jaunga.” Translation: The day he’s down and out, desperate for cash, and with no other options left, he’ll announce Wasseypur 3 just to fund his medical bills. “Jab mere paas koi chaara nahi bachega, main Wasseypur 3 announce karke bohot paise kamaunga taaki mera ilaaj ho sake,” he quipped.

The original Gangs of Wasseypur films, released in 2012, were a seismic event in Indian cinema. They followed the bloody saga of a coal mafia family in Wasseypur, a town that became synonymous with revenge, betrayal, and a lot of cursing in the local dialect. With Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi, Richa Chadda, Huma Qureshi, and Tigmanshu Dhulia leading the charge, the films were lauded for their raw authenticity and cinematic brilliance.
