Monday, September 16, 2024 Portugal has enjoyed an exceptional summer season, setting new records in tourism, and the momentum is expected to carry on through the fall. While the entire country has seen a surge in visitors, one destination in particular has stood out as this year’s top tourism hotspot. According to data from the Portugal Institute of National Statistics, Portimão recorded the highest growth in overnight stays this summer, welcoming 10.

9% more visitors compared to last year. As the largest city in the Algarve region, Portimão is known for its stunning beaches, rich history, and attractive affordability. Here’s why Portimão deserves a spot on your travel list, perhaps even over Lisbon: No visit to Portimão is complete without experiencing its breathtaking beaches.

Although Portugal enjoys a Mediterranean-like climate, Portimão lies on the Atlantic coast. This, however, does nothing to detract from the beauty of its beaches. The coastline here is lined with dramatic cliffs, and you’ll find magnificent rock formations rising from the water just off the shore.

One of the top spots to explore is Praia dos Três Castelos. This beach not only offers golden sands but also features incredible rock formations and caves, perfect for exploration. For adventure seekers, this area is ideal for water sports like kayaking and paddleboarding, activities for which Portimão is renowned.

You can also take a sunset cruise from Portimão to the famous Benagil caves, a must-see in the region, all for just $19. Beyond the beaches, Portimão offers several noteworthy attractions, such as the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina. This medieval fortress dates back over 400 years to the reign of King Phillip II.

While the chapel inside is charming, the real highlight is the breathtaking views from the top, and the best part is, entry is free. Portimão is well-known for being an affordable destination, particularly during the quieter fall and winter months. During the fall season, you can find comfortable 3-star accommodations for as little as $50 per night.

For example, a 3-night stay from October 16 to October 19 at the highly rated Hotel Santa Catarina Algarve costs $240 for two people sharing, which breaks down to just $40 per person, per night. This hotel is just 50 meters from the beach, and all rooms come with private balconies. If you’re looking to indulge, the top-rated 4-star option for the same dates is the Jupiter Marina Hotel – Couples & Spa.

Located 100 meters from the riverside, this hotel boasts a rooftop infinity pool and a luxurious spa. A 3-night stay for two costs $434, or $73.60 per person, per night.

Part of Portimão’s charm is its location, a little off the beaten path, especially in the fall and winter when there are no direct flights to the Algarve for American travelers. You can fly indirectly into Faro Airport or opt to fly into Lisbon and take public transport to the Algarve and Portimão. The latter option is often more affordable, and Portugal’s public transportation is both budget-friendly and dependable.

Direct flights to Lisbon are available from major U.S. cities such as New York, Miami, Washington, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.

For example, a round-trip flight from New York to Lisbon, departing on October 17 and returning on October 23, is priced at $769 with Delta. The flight duration is approximately 7 hours 15 minutes outbound and 8 hours 15 minutes inbound. Once in Lisbon, you can catch a scenic train to Portimão, with the journey taking around 3 hours and 26 minutes.

A one-way ticket costs about $35. Although a long train ride after a flight might sound exhausting, why not take the opportunity to explore Lisbon for a few days before heading to Portimão? The train journey offers spectacular views and is an experience worth savoring..
