Listen to Story An afternoon nap, mostly counted among traditional methods taught by our grandmothers, has been scientifically proven to enhance brain function. Often taken after lunch, these naps that last 5 minutes to 30 minutes or an hour, can impact the brain, especially memory and decision-making skills, in multiple ways. A study found that individuals who regularly take short naps in the afternoon exhibit better cognitive function, including improved memory, alertness, and mental clarity.

The study, published in the journal Sleep , revealed that napping for 15 minutes after lunch, increased the participants' alertness, performance, and autonomic function. Interestingly, another research revealed that those who napped for longer periods, such as 60 minutes or more, did not see the same benefits and, in some cases, experienced grogginess or sleep inertia (a brief period of confusion and reduced alertness or mood right after waking up). Researchers believe that these short naps help to clear out information overload from the brain, allowing for better processing and storage of new information.

Dr Sunita Nagpal, Senior Gynaecologist and Practitioner, Salubritas Medcentre, highlighted that while napping has benefits, there are disadvantages as well. The right timing should be according to your body clock . The best being between 1 pm to 3.

30 pm, early afternoon, according to Dr Nagpal. However, nap shouldn't be taken just because it is considered healthy. "When considering a nap, one should experience fatigue or sleepiness, when they have had long work shifts and could not had adequate sleep," as per the expert.

Disadvantages of afternoon naps If the nap is prolonged, it has its disadvantages: "Afternoon naps are good for kids as it boosts concentration, helps gain retention power and causes slight weight gain," said Dr Nagpal. While afternoon naps are encouraged, they should be done by adding physical activity to one's morning or evening routine, according to the expert..
