The Resident Pastor 2, Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), London, Tobi Ashimolowo has stressed the need for Christians to cultivate corporate prayer as part of their lifestyle. Speaking on the theme: “Corporate Prayer,” which was aired on national TV, the Resident Pastor 2 said believers of old were able to do exploits through corporate prayer. He mentioned different types of prayers to include prayer of petition, thanksgiving and intercession, among others, adding these prayers helped the early church to intercede for their communities, nations, the church.

He said: “Many of the revivals that we read about or hear about started as a result of corporate prayers. Majority of prayers mentioned in the New Testament were corporate prayers. The early church would meet often and sometimes daily to pray corporately.

I can confidently assume that when the apostles gathered in Acts 2, they were praying corporately and it was prayer of being in one accord.” Ashimolowo, who quoted Acts 2:1-4, to further buttress his point, reminded Christians that corporate prayer has always and will continue to be an important part of the local church, the body of Christ and believers. Explaining what corporate prayer is, he said: “It simply means when the church or congregation or a group get together to pray, focusing on the same topic.

Corporate prayer is when we come together to pray for our local community. Corporate prayer is when we come together to pray for those among us that need God’s help. “In a nutshell, corporate prayer is when believers team up together to pray and tackle things through prayer.

Throughout the scriptures, we see corporate prayer take place in different places. David in Psalm 34:3 says, ‘oh, magnify the Lord with me, let us exhort his name forever. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, ‘when my people, not individuals, my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways I will hear from heaven.

.. When we come humbly together in prayer heaven will hear us.

“In Acts 1:14, Paul hinted that corporate prayer of the church along with God’s grace was a great help for him and his companions. T his passage of scripture shows us that as individuals we are not self-sufficient. It is the corporate prayer of the saints and prayer for our community and God’s grace that sustain us.

This example of Paul letting the church to know that their prayers have had impact.” On the power and effect of corporate prayer, Ashimolowo said: “We are giving examples of corporate prayer in the scripture so that we are encouraged to engage in this kind of prayer. The corporate prayer that we will look at is that of King Jehoshaphat in 2 Chronicles 20:22; 20:4.

All the people of Judah had come corporately to seek the face of God and called on his infinite mercy, seeking an answer through corporate prayer. Some people have come together corporately to cry out to God and we have seen the result of their prayers. It was their corporate prayers that caused God to move in such a mighty way that no one man needed to lift up a soul.

This is the power behind corporate prayer. Corporate prayer is powerful and effective,” Ashimolowo noted. You must be logged in to post a comment.
