When Saul Goodman aka James McGill was introduced during Breaking Bad’s second season in the episode aptly named ‘Better Call Saul’, none of us at the time — including the showrunners — thought this would be the beginning of something that’ll go on to cement its place in the upper echelons of primetime television. Six seasons, sixty-three episodes, an ensemble of memorable characters, and a record number of Emmy award snubs later, Better Call Saul makes a really strong case for itself as one of the best shows to ever hit TV screens. Right from adding a lot of depth to the Breaking Bad universe, exploring the characters’ origins as well as their complex relationships, and making the mythos just a whole lot richer, the show excels as a spin-off.

However, calling it a mere spin-off is frankly disrespectful in my opinion as the show is more than that, a whole lot more. That is exactly what Better Call Saul gives us.

We get to see the man behind the Saul Goodman persona. Right from ‘Slippin’ Jimmy’ to James Morgan McGill and finally Saul Goodman, the show gives us an in-depth view of how the character grows from being a small-time con artist in the Chicago suburbs.
