Washington State is off to a 4-0 start after being left behind in conference realignment, but that perfect record will be put to the test against the No. 25 Boise State this weekend. The Broncos are also looking to score a key win for the College Football Playoff resume.
After an emotional win over rival Washington in Week 3, Washington State survived a real scare against San Jose State last weekend. The Cougars found themselves in an old fashioned shootout but managed to pull out a 54-52 win. Quarterback John Mateer continued his hot start with 501 total yards and five total touchdowns.
The concern for Washington State is that its defense surrendered 375 passing yards to Spartans quarterback Emmett Brown while receiver Nick Nash torched the Cougs to the tune of 16 receptions for 152 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Washington State has to clean things up on that side of the ball before going to Boise. Boise State is coming off a demolition of Portland State, but its most impressive performance of the season probably came in a 37-34 loss to Oregon.
The Broncos more than held their own against a College Football Playoff favorite, and running back Ashton Jeanty was exceptional. Jeanty has already thrust himself into the Heisman Trophy conversation with 586 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in just three games. He could give the Cougars some major headaches.
