T he second edition of Design Miami.Paris, the showcase for collectable design that started life in Miami in December, has just concluded in Paris. It is the sister fair to the Paris edition of Art Basel, which ran at the same time, thus giving Paris a vibrant week with two important fairs as well as shows in galleries across the city.

Design Miami’s Paris base is L’hôtel de Maisons, an important hôtel particulier, or mansion, in Rue de l’Université in the 7th arrondissement, conveniently located smack in the centre of Paris’s famed St Germain gallery area. The grandness of the location certainly elevates this fair, unlike, say, Miami’s tent or Basel’s exhibition centre, but sometimes the gilded salons can overwhelm the works the galleries are presenting. The young gallerist Maxime Flatry showed suitable restraint by showing just one sofa and a pair of armchairs by Paul Dupré-Lafon and a side table in a boiserie panelled room.
