8pm, BBC One Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace return to put 32 ambitious chefs through their paces – a seven-week marathon that begins tonight with the infamous skills test. I’m not sure I could boil an egg under that amount of pressure. Anyway, Galetti wants them to knock up a carrot schnitzel (who knew?) and serve it with a white bean houmous, while Wareing tasks his pair to rustle up choux pastry beignets served with lavender sugar.
7pm, BBC Two Avid readers might find this celeb-heavy book group a bit lightweight. It’s certainly a tad too busy to really engage with the tomes under discussion as Sara Cox chairs another new set of reviews, starting with Adrian Edmondson, Alan Davies, Taj Atwal and Sara Pascoe bringing in their own favourite books as well as discussing All the Colours of the Dark by Chris Whitaker. 7.
30pm, BBC Two Nice to see that Mary Berry has followed the Jamie and Nigella route and dropped the surname, as she returns to help celebrities with their cooking. She begins by visiting Alan Carr , who’s hoping to be weaned off takeaways and is taught some classic home-cooked comfort food. 8pm, Channel 4 The bakers take on some seasonal challenges in Autumn Week.
In the Signature, they bake a sweet, autumn-inspired pie before making a vegan version of a traditional Northern classic in the Technical. The Showstopper sees them celebrating seasonal vegetables by transforming them into a cake. 9.
15pm, Channel 4 The wilderness bonding experime.
