9pm, BBC One A rare and very welcome television lead for Rebecca Hall who plays Claire, a popular English teacher who begins to hear a low humming sound that no one else around her is able to perceive. Is it a form of tinnitus, something to do with the erection of a new 5G mast, or perhaps some local wind turbines? The persistent but seemingly innocuous noise causes tension with her husband Paul (Prasanna Puwanarajah, who played Martin Bashir in The Crown ) and daughter Ashley (Mia Tharia). But then one of her pupils admits to also hearing the hum and they set out together to investigate.

.. 8pm, BBC One Cameras follow Paddy McGuinness on a 300-mile endurance cycle challenge for Children In Need , as well as covering his training under the expert guidance of Sir Chris Hoy (who is, of course, facing his own, rather more serious challenge).

The route takes McGuinness from Wrexham through Flintshire, Cheshire, Merseyside, Lancashire, Cumbria and Dumfriesshire, with the finish line in the centre of Glasgow. 8pm, Channel 4 This latest series seems to have flown by, and it’s now the semi-final. For Pâtisserie Week, the bakers create “buttery breakfast pastries fit for a Parisian pâtisserie” in the signature, challenge their precision in the technical, and, to earn their place in the final, create a stunning fruit entremet in the showstopper.

9.15pm, Channel 4 Earlier this evening, Perkins is Mary Berry’s guest pupil on Mary’s Foolproof Dinners (7.30pm, BBC Two).
