The sinking of the luxury superyacht Bayesian off the coast of Italy has left the world searching for answers. It all began on a stormy Monday morning, when Matteo Cannia, a seasoned fisherman, noticed lightning while sitting on a bench in Porticello. As the storm grew in intensity, locals like Cannia and his friend were alerted by the sound of water entering homes.

Around 04:15, fisherman Fabio Cefalù, who had initially decided against going out to sea, noticed a flare and decided to investigate. What he found were only cushions and floating debris—signs that the Bayesian had already sunk , as per the reports of Yahoo news. A voyage turns tragic Mike Lynch, a British IT entrepreneur, was the owner of the 56-meter sailing boat The Bayesian, which was docked a short distance from the coast.

Lynch, who was just cleared of fraud charges in the US, had celebrated on the yacht. Sadly, the opulent vacation soon devolved into a nightmare. Just fifteen of the twenty-two passengers on board made it out alive when the yacht overturned and they were placed in life rafts.

The yacht went down in just 16 minutes, a period during which the power failed, and the GPS signal was lost.

Experts and investigators are scrutinizing the actions of the yacht’s captain, James Cutfield, who survived along with eight crew members. Some experts believe that the yacht may have been left vulnerable due to human error. Giovanni Costantino, the head of the company that built the Bayesian, suggested that hatches and side entrances may have been left open, allowing water to flood the yacht.

As the investigation continues, much of the focus is on whether the captain and crew took appropriate precautions in the face of the storm. The yacht’s black box recorder, once located, could provide crucial information. In the meantime, the survivors and families of the victims are seeking closure.

The wreckage of the Bayesian, lying 50 meters underwater, may hold the key to understanding what went wrong during those fateful 16 minutes.
