Taking off makeup isn’t a fun job, but it’s even less fun when that removal causes redness and skin irritation, as it can do for those with sensitive eyes. The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link.

Learn more. There’s a huge choice of eye makeup removers available – from balms to pre-soaked pads – but any that cause you to scrub at your eyes or wipe repeatedly will cause more irritation. Avoid products that are perfumed and look for hypoallergenic removers.

As somebody with sensitive eyes, I find that micellar water is one of the best options. Micelles are tiny clusters of oil that act almost like a magnet for dirt and makeup. The solution feels just like water, it’s not oily or greasy and it doesn’t contain alcohol, which can be drying.

All you do is apply it to a cotton or reusable pad and wipe – there’s no need to rinse afterwards. Many brands have their own versions, but CeraVe ’s is fragrance-free. Bioderma Sensibio Cleansing Micellar Oil is also a good option.

Waterproof mascara is notoriously hard to remove and often needs a bit of rubbing, so it may be worth considering switching to a durable regular mascara, or trying a tube mascara : these create a film around the lashes which simply slides off when removed. Beauty Pie and Milk both have long-wearing tubing products. The combined effort of a micellar and a new mascara might, I hope, be kinder on your eyes.
