Regarding the letter “Silence isn’t Golden” (Oct. 27): Dietrich Bonhoffer, a German pastor and theologian, was not silent in the face of Nazi oppression of Jews who the Nazis saw as the other who were different from them. I can see the imposition of public prayer at school board or other government functions in that same oppressive light.

As Nicholas Ferroni said, “If you are OK with having Muslim, Jewish, and Hindu students sit through a Christian prayer in public school but are not OK with having Christian students sit through a Muslim, Jewish, or Hindu prayer, that is NOT religious freedom. It is religious oppression.” Much to the dismay of my conservative, evangelical, Christian nationalist friends, the Founders did not create a Christian nation, though many of the Founders were Christian.

. Thus far no one has ever stopped me from praying, worshipping or being part of my United Methodist Christian faith. So, kudos to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education for getting it right with a moment of silence and doing its best to respect its neighbor.

To my Christian nationalist friends, I have to ask: Now what exactly do you think it means to love your neighbor? Duke Ison Winston-Salem Robert Clark has been a moderate voice for common sense and fiscal restraint on the City Council. On its own, Clark’s record easily qualifies him for another term.
