The Washington Commanders and members of the military trained side-by-side last Monday at the team’s training camp. The event — USAA’s Salute to Service NFL Boot Camp — has become an annual happening at the Commanders’ training facility in Ashburn. “Nobody does team better than our military, and I enjoy spending the time with them pre-practice and post-practice,” Commanders first-year coach Dan Quinn told reporters during a press conference before the event.

“So a really cool day, and we’re pumped and honored.” The military participants, local service members from Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, watched Commanders practice Monday morning and met and got autographs and pictures with the players. Then, a “boot camp” competition was held at the team’s indoor training facility for drills similar to those used by NFL coaches to evaluate players.

Service members were split into teams to compete in the 40-yard dash, broad jump, three-cone shuttle, receiving gauntlet and the QB arm challenge. The team with the best score in the combined training drills received tickets to the Commanders “Salute to Service” game in November.
