Pune: A special court in the city has convicted and sentenced a 30-year-old Warje resident to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment in a case of kidnapping and repeated gang rape of two sisters, aged 16 and 14 then, in April 2015. “The crime also involved two children in conflict with law. They were then charged separately before the Juvenile Justice Board and released on bail from the observation home,” senior inspector Nilkanth Jagtap, the first investigating officer in the case, said on Monday.

“The convict’s brother, who aided the crime by providing financial and logistical support, was wanted in the case for nine years before he was nabbed on May 4 this year. A supplementary chargesheet was filed against him,” he said. Special judge S R Salunkhe on Aug 3 found the main accused (aged 21 years at the time of the crime) guilty of offences under sections 5 and 6 (aggravated sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

Pocso case convict commits suicide in jail A 21-year-old prisoner, Uppada Gowri Sankar Rao, committed suicide by hanging himself in the bathroom of Visakhapatnam Central Jail. He was convicted in a Pocso case and had been in distress. Despite counselling, he ended his life.
