Pune: Wadgaon Sheri residents on Sunday tabled a charter of demands to five key candidates fighting the assembly election from the constituency. The Know Your Candidate (KYC) event, organised by the residents' group Team Swachh Kalyani Nagar (TSKN), demanded time-bound commitments from the candidates for infrastructure projects, better water supply, waste and traffic management, a curb on the establishment of commercial institutions in residential spaces and governance. NCP MLA Sunil Tingre, NCP (SCP)'s Bapu Pathare and his son Surendra and Hulgesh Chalwadi of the Bahujan Samaj Party attended the event.
Other contestants invited by TSKN did not turn up for the event. Sarika Sengar, a resident, said, "We are not asking for much, merely basic ‘bijli, sadak, paani' (electricity, roads, and water). Our vote will go to anyone willing to commit to these basic rights with realistic plans.
" MLA Tingre addressed the issue regarding stormwater drainage and frequent monsoon flooding. He said, "The stormwater pipelines that were laid earlier could handle only 65mm of rain. Now, with incidents of heavy spells up to 120mm under an hour, the pipeline capacity has been increased to handle 100mm of rain.
With this, the flooding issues have been resolved to a great extent. We must also consider the growing population in the area that is putting additional pressure on the current infrastructure." The citizens also voiced concerns regarding the depleting air quality index.
