Time is ringing out for The Salvation Army of Waco and its annual Red Kettle fundraising drive, with only eight "ringing days" left before Christmas and nearly half of this year's $185,000 goal left to reach. The Salvation Army of Waco is hoping for last-minute community support of its Red Kettle drive, both in donations and in volunteers willing to ring a bell and staff a kettle for a few hours. The Red Kettle campaign, in which handbell-ringing volunteers encourage and oversee cash donations, provides operational funds for the nonprofit charity, including its housing for the homeless, its Community Kitchen and other social services.
Anyone interested in signing up for a shift, from 2 hours to an entire day, can do so at registertoring.com . The Waco Salvation Army has donation kettles and bell ringers at 22 locations through New Year's Eve, but, like many Salvation Army chapters and divisions across the country, is finding contributions are lagging.
Nationally, Salvation Army officers have attributed the drop-off due to an increase in online shopping that has reduced foot traffic at brick-and-mortar shopping locations and a slow rebound for volunteer participation in the years after the pandemic. They also have added QR codes linked to digital payment options at Red Kettle displays in an effort to reach people who do not carry cash. “Donors can use Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Venmo as donation options at the red kettle, as well as good old-fashioned cash.
