Jamaican dancehall icon Vybz Kartel is relishing his newfound freedom, taking the opportunity to share insights about his life behind bars. The artist, who spent nearly 13 years in prison, made headlines for continuing to release hit after hit even while incarcerated. In a recent interview seen by The Sauce, Vybz Kartel shed light on the creative methods he used to keep his music career alive during his imprisonment.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, revealed that some of his most popular tracks, including the fan-favourite “Fever,” were recorded under extraordinary circumstances. Without access to a traditional studio setup, he resorted to using two cellular devices to lay down his vocals. One of the iPhones served as a makeshift microphone, positioned just three feet away from his face, while the other was connected to earphones, allowing him to sync with the beat.

Ingeniously, he used his prison-issued mattress to soundproof his recordings, mimicking the acoustic padding found in professional studios. His producers would later work their magic, syncing and mastering the tracks to produce the polished hits that fans have come to love. Despite being behind bars, Vybz Kartel’s music career flourished.

He released multiple albums, including King of the Dancehall (2016), To Tanesha (2020), and Of Dons & Divas (2020). His hits, such as “Mhm Hm,” “Any Weather,” and “Don’t Come Back,” were all recorded while incarcerated, proving that even the harshest circumstances couldn’t stifle his creative spirit. READ MORE: During the candid interview, Vybz Kartel also opened up about his personal life, sharing that the first thing he did upon his release was to have sex with his fiancée, Sidem Ozturk.
