Saturday, August 3, 2024 An incident at Victoria International Airport (YYJ) on the afternoon of August 2nd left the pilot and passenger of a small aircraft shaken but thankfully uninjured. The emergency landing occurred after the landing gear of their Yak/Nanchang (Nanchang CJ-6A) aircraft collapsed upon touchdown. At approximately 5 p.
m., the Yak/Nanchang CJ-6A, a vintage Chinese/Russian-developed plane, had just completed a flight and was returning to Victoria International Airport. As the aircraft landed, the landing gear unexpectedly collapsed, causing the plane to skid along the runway.
Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, both the pilot and passenger emerged unharmed. Rod Hunchak, the director of community relations for the YYJ Airport Authority, confirmed the occurrence and outlined the airport’s response. “The plane was damaged and had to be towed off the runway, but that was the extent of the incident,” said Hunchak.
“Emergency equipment was immediately dispatched to the runway as per normal airport protocols. “The thing is, that most small aircraft have fixed undercarriages but the CJ-6A, which is a Chinese copy of a Russian aircraft developed back in the 1970s, has retractable landing gear,” Morris explained. “They are great planes, but something like this can happen. It’s just a good thing that no one was hurt.
