Bayern Munich had been riding their luck and finally lost a game in toothless fashion against Mainz in a game marred with mistakes from players and officials alike. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said that his team were not at their best: “We played against a team with a lot of life and spirit, a team that was prepared to fight for every moment. I don’t think there was a lack of fighting from our side, we did that as well, but we did it better in the past.

We weren’t at our best level today. This game is done. We’ll use this defeat to build up fire in the next few days leading to Friday,” Kompany said (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia ).

“We can’t change the outcome of this game anymore. The defeat always hurts, but we can win so many games in the future. This feeling is there, the team always wants to take steps forward and improve, the motivation is there.

Now our only immediate goal is to win on Friday.” The 38-year-old coach was also asked about the status of Harry Kane who is out injured. Kompany said that Kane is “ doing well ; he was touch-and-go for this game.

So hopefully he’ll be there for the next game”. Looking for more thoughts and analysis of Bayern Munich’s stunning 2-1 loss to Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga?
