Pune: Several areas in the city, particularly those in the east and southeast, experienced intense rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning on Wednesday, triggering heavy waterlogging and traffic congestion. Vimannagar and Wadgaon Sheri were severely affected by the sudden downpour, with Vimannagar receiving a continuous rain spell lasting one-and-a-half hours till 5pm. The heavy rain led to significant waterlogging in various locations in Wadgaon Sheri and Vimannagar.
Commuters said the Ramwadi underpass was submerged in knee-deep water, causing major traffic congestion on the route from Vimannagar to Kalyaninagar. Other areas like Swargate, Pashan, Sus, Sutarwadi and Baner also recorded substantial rainfall. According to data recorded at 5.
30pm on Wednesday, Wadgaon Sheri received the highest rainfall at 71mm, followed by Lonavla (22.5mm) and Koregaon Park (20.5mm).
Shivajinagar recorded 2.3mm of rainfall during the period, while areas like Pashan and Hadapsar received minimal rainfall of 0.5mm each.
Rainfall data was not available for Vimannagar. SD Sanap, scientist, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, said, "The Wednesday's showers were convective in nature, especially since the city has been experiencing high day temperature over the last few days. Thundershowers are a usual phenomenon during the retreating phase of the monsoon .
