The Department of Transport and Public Works in Ho Chi Minh City has recommended an immediate cleanup initiative for a section of the Saigon River to improve environmental conditions and boost the tourism appeal of Bach Dang Wharf, a key attraction in the heart of the city. The proposed initiative seeks to clear floating debris and water hyacinths from a section of the Saigon River, stretching from the T-junction with Kenh Te Canal to the Saigon Bridge, ahead of the busy April 30 holiday. This holiday marks the 50th anniversary of southern Vietnam’s liberation and National Reunification Day.
The department pointed out that a successful pilot project, using innovative technology to remove waste from the river segment, was carried out between August and December 2023. This program resulted in noticeable improvements in water quality and a reduction in pollution around Bach Dang Wharf. However, the cleanup efforts have stalled since the pilot ended, primarily due to the lack of finalized cost estimates from the city’s authorities.
Despite some support from different agencies, the accumulation of waste continues to be a significant issue, adversely affecting the urban environment, public health, and river traffic. The ongoing accumulation of waste has significantly impacted air quality, especially in the area around Bach Dang Wharf, a key tourist spot.Floating water hyacinths and litter have not only hindered the river’s flow but have also caused damage to navigation buoys.
