Monday, August 26, 2024 The 15th annual “Tourism Through Viet Bac Heritage Region” program kicked off on Sunday in Bac Kan city, featuring captivating performances from six different art troupes. Viet Bac holds a significant place in Vietnam’s history as it served as the headquarters of the Communist Party of Vietnam during a critical period of resistance. In the years leading up to 1945, this region became the nerve center for the Party’s leadership, coordinating efforts that would eventually culminate in the uprising against French colonial rule.

The strategic location of Viet Bac, nestled in the northern mountains, provided a secure and remote base from which revolutionary activities could be planned and executed with minimal interference from the colonial powers. In 1945, as the momentum of the revolution grew, Viet Bac played an even more crucial role. It was here that the Viet Minh government established its headquarters, guiding the resistance against French forces during the First Indochina War.

The rugged terrain and the solidarity of the local population made Viet Bac an ideal stronghold for the Viet Minh, allowing them to effectively wage guerrilla warfare against the better-equipped French military. The region became synonymous with the spirit of resistance and the determination of the Vietnamese people to reclaim their independence. Throughout the war, Viet Bac was more than just a military base; it was a symbol of the unyielding resolve of the Vietnamese people.

The region’s leaders worked tirelessly to organize and mobilize resources, maintaining communication with other parts of the country and coordinating military campaigns that would eventually lead to significant victories. The Battle of Dien Bien Phu, which marked the decisive end of French colonial rule, was influenced by strategies developed in Viet Bac. The region’s contribution to the war effort was indispensable and left an indelible mark on Vietnam’s fight for freedom.

Even after the war, Viet Bac continued to be celebrated as a historical and cultural landmark. It represents not only a chapter of military history but also the enduring spirit of the Vietnamese resistance. Today, the legacy of Viet Bac is preserved through various commemorations and heritage programs, ensuring that future generations remember the sacrifices and the pivotal role this region played in the nation’s struggle for independence.

The annual culture-tourism program is a celebrated event that rotates each year among six distinct provinces: Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Ha Giang, and Thai Nguyen. This rotation allows each province to showcase its unique cultural and historical heritage, attracting visitors from across the country and beyond. The program is designed to highlight the rich diversity of the Viet Bac region, offering participants a deeper understanding of the traditions, landscapes, and communities that define this part of Vietnam.

This year’s program, spanning five days, is packed with a variety of engaging activities that cater to different interests. One of the highlights is the OCOP (One Commune, One Product) agricultural product festival, where visitors can explore and purchase local specialties produced by each of the six provinces. This initiative not only promotes the unique agricultural products of the region but also supports local economies by encouraging sustainable development.

Alongside the festival, there is a culinary showcase where traditional dishes from each province are presented, giving visitors a chance to taste the diverse flavors of Viet Bac. In addition to the food and product exhibitions, the program features an art exhibition displaying paintings and photographs that capture the beauty and cultural essence of Viet Bac. This exhibition provides a visual journey through the landscapes, people, and historical moments that have shaped the region.

For those seeking adventure, the Bac Kan mountain bike racing tournament offers an exciting way to experience the province’s rugged terrain, combining sports with scenic exploration. Moreover, a tour guide competition is being held to recognize and promote the skills of local guides who play a crucial role in bringing the history and culture of Viet Bac to life for visitors. This year’s program in Bac Kan is particularly significant as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the province, celebrated on August 24.

To mark this historic occasion, Bac Kan is organizing a series of commemorative events that pay tribute to the province’s role in the fight for independence. These events serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by past generations and the enduring spirit of the people of Bac Kan. The celebration adds a profound sense of history and pride to the culture-tourism program, making it a memorable experience for all who attend.

As the host of this year’s program, Bac Kan has gone above and beyond to ensure that the event is both educational and enjoyable. The blend of cultural activities, historical commemorations, and outdoor adventures offers something for everyone, making it a must-attend event for those interested in exploring the rich heritage of Viet Bac. Whether through tasting local delicacies, viewing artistic depictions of the region, or participating in commemorative events, visitors are given a unique opportunity to connect with the soul of this historically significant area of Vietnam.
