Sunday, September 8, 2024 The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon is set to make a triumphant return to the scenic resort town of Victoria Falls on July 3, 2022, after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has expressed optimism about the marathon’s impact on the country’s tourism sector, which was severely affected by the pandemic’s travel restrictions. The ZTA believes that the return of the popular marathon will play a key role in reviving Zimbabwe’s tourism industry.

With more than 5,000 participants expected from various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, the event will be a major draw for both local and international tourists. “We are thrilled to see the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon return, with participants from across the globe,” said ZTA spokesperson Godfrey Koti. “This is fantastic news for our tourism industry, and we are optimistic about the event’s contribution to the ongoing recovery of tourism in Zimbabwe.



” This year’s marathon is being promoted under the banner of sports tourism, a growing trend that blends athletic events with travel experiences. In addition to participating in the race, attendees will have the opportunity to explore various adventure activities in Victoria Falls, such as white-water rafting, bungee jumping, and game drives. These activities are expected to further stimulate the tourism industry, which contributes 6.

3% to the national GDP, with a value of US$1.23 billion. Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has rebranded this year’s marathon as “Run the Big Three,” with three distinct routes designed to attract a wide range of participants.

Econet spokesperson Fungai Mandiveyi explained the rebranding: “The three routes reflect the diverse abilities of participants, offering something for everyone, from professional runners to families enjoying a fun day out.” With over US$25,000 in prizes to be won, runners are encouraged to register for the event via the official marathon website, using payment options like EcoCash, MasterCard, or Visa Card. This year’s marathon also serves as a qualifying race for the 2022 Comrades Marathon, which will take place in South Africa on August 28.

As the tourism sector continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, events like the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon are crucial in attracting international visitors and promoting Zimbabwe as a top travel destination. “We are seeing a return to normalcy with the hosting of events and people meeting in person again,” Koti noted. The marathon is expected to provide a much-needed boost to local businesses in Victoria Falls, from hotels and restaurants to tour operators, as tourism numbers gradually rebound.
