Victoria Coren Mitchell hits back at BBC Only Connect backlash (Image: BBC) Victoria Coren Mitchell showed her support after a contestant from BBC's Only Connect quiz show clapped back at internet trolls after their unwarranted criticism of her appearance on the programme. Danielle Cope, a member of the victorious Al Frescans team, encountered a barrage of negative comments on social media after the broadcast last Monday (August 12), despite her team's impressive 10-point win. Shocked by the personal nature of the backlash rather than reactions to the show itself, she voiced her disappointment on social media.

She tweeted: "Browsing through tweets about Only Connect and was kinda shocked to see that most of them are about me. But then again I am a loud, fat, confident woman. "Maybe I should be proud that I have annoyed so many people! I cringed at 99 percent of the things I said too.

(Image: BBC) Cope also pointed out the misplaced criticisms of her articulation: "Also funny that so many people take saying it 'horned viper' as pretension rather than silliness. Anyway, glad to have made an impression and helped the series get off with a bang.

Can't wait to just watch it like normal next week." Victoria Coren Mitchell responded to Danielle's tweets with a reassuring message. The 52-year-old wrote: "Ssh now get away with you, you gorgeous creature.

Social media isn't real, it's just a place people go to shout things. You're clever and fun and the viewers love you." Danielle quickly replied, staunchly refusing to let cyberbullies tarnish her experience: "Thanks so much Victoria, you're totally right! I'm not letting it get to me.

It's because your character really shone through the screen. It shouldn't matter what women look like but you looked terrific! And you're super clever! You're my favourite." Another offered support: "Oh no! Watching last night, I thought how absolutely gorgeous you are.

Funny, sparky, totally GOT Only Connect in the style of a true fan. Honestly, you were brilliant. I was so pleased your team won.

B****x to Haters." A third advised: "As a former quiz show contestant I'd advise anyone who's on TV to never look themselves up on social media. The things people come out with is truly horrible and deeply unfounded.

They're just jealous it's not them. You did awesome, takes a lot of courage to go on a game show, I was too scared of online hate to go through with more applications." Trending It comes after Victoria shocked fans when she announced she had secretly welcomed her second child with husband David Mitchell in November last year.

She tweeted: "Many people are assuming my tweet yesterday was a Halloween costume. “Not at all; last week I had a baby and nothing currently fits me except cloaks. Luckily, Only Connect is a pre-record.

Happy All Saints Day!” Victoria, who is also a professional poker player, met her husband at a film premiere in 2007 - and they married in 2012..
