Vicky Kaushal recalls shooting with sand mafia secretly for Gangs of Wasseypur set: “500 people were surrounding us”

Bollywood star Vicky Kaushal, promoting his latest release Bad Newz, shared a harrowing experience from his early days as an assistant director on Anurag Kashyap's critically acclaimed film Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). The film, based on a real-life story about gangsters and a coal mafia, mirrored reality a little too closely for Vicky during filming. The actor appeared on YouTuber Tanmay Bhat's channel, where he recounted a near-violent encounter with the sand mafia.Witnessing the Dark Side"The coal smuggling that was shown in the film was real," Vicky said. "We were shooting it, and one incident happened when we went to capture visuals of illegal sand mining. I was baffled because it was the first time I realised this happens so openly." He continued, describing the large-scale operation: "There weren't just two trucks standing there, there were 500 trucks. It felt like a properly run business, not actual smuggling."Caught in the Act"We were shooting them secretly," Vicky explained, "and some people came. 500 people were surrounding us. The camera attendant, an older man in his 50s, called the unit saying the camera wouldn't come on time because we were caught." A misunderstanding then escalated the situation. "Hearing him talk over the phone, the person there thought he was calling someone influential," Vicky said. "That man slapped the cameraman, snatched the camera, and threatened to break it. Both of us were about to get beaten up. We somehow escaped and saved our lives."Vicky's brush with danger on the set of Gangs of Wasseypur stands in stark contrast to the success he's enjoying with his latest release, Bad Newz.
