Vadodara: Ahead of the festive season, the food safety department of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has asked food vendors in the city – particularly those selling sweets – to use only natural colours . The department convened a meeting of food vendors on Friday and apprised them of various steps to be taken to ensure the safety of food items like sweets and savouries that are widely consumed during Rakshabandhan, Janmashtami, and Ganpati festivals. A major concern was the use of colours in some food items, particularly sweets in which food colours are widely used by shops.
However, the sellers may unintentionally use colours that do not fit the criteria set under the Food Safety and Standards Act. “Synthetic colours are allowed below 100 parts per million (PPM). While shopkeepers may believe that their products are within the safety limits, that may not be the case in reality.
Only a test can reveal if the product is safe,” said an official. The official added that to avoid any complications, it was suggested that the shopkeepers stick to natural colours only. “This will ensure that they do not break the rules even unknowingly,” he added.
