On Tuesday, vendors at the Suva Municipal Market came together to celebrate Fiji Day, transforming the market into a vibrant sea of blue. Both young and old joined in the festivities, showcasing their national pride. Tevita Boseiwaqa, the special administrator chair of the Suva City Council, emphasised the significance of the day, calling it a moment to reflect on the nation’s journey and to stand united in support of Fiji’s future.
The celebrations highlighted the community spirit and collective identity that Fiji Day represents, as vendors and shoppers alike reveled in the occasion. “We just want them to enjoy the day,” Mr Boseiwaqa said. “They toil every morning, every night to try and be here for the sustenance of their family,” he said.

Photo: Ronald Kumar “They are also our source of food, the food we have on our tables, so to see them celebrate and enjoy the day is just meaningful.” Anisa Marama, an 89-year-old market vendor from Naluwai, Naitasiri, expressed her pride in being alive to celebrate Fiji’s independence.
“I was there when Fiji gained independence in 1970, and 54 years later, I’m still so happy to join in the celebrations,” Ms Marama said. Reflecting on the changes over the years, she emphasised the importance of embracing their roots and fostering unity among the diverse races represented in Fiji. “We need to love one another and come together to move Fiji forward,�.
