The community have come together to repair damage to a local woodland after it was attacked by vandals. Police received a report of criminal damage to Millennium Wood on Thursday, August 1. In a moving post on GoFundMe, a representative of the wood described how special the area is: "Birdboxes were erected thanks to the kindness of locals.

Most had a brass plaque on them in remembrance of a loved one. "Fallen trees and branches from the high winds over the Christmas period last year were gathered and removed. Over time everything came together and it became a beautiful, pristine and much loved little woodland.

With the arrival of spring, birds nested in the boxes, nurtured their young who grew, fledged and took to the sky. Everything was perfect." confirmed a case of criminal damage to the wood earlier this month.

They said: "We received an online report on Thursday 1 August about an incident of criminal damage which had taken place earlier in the day in Castle Cary. A memorial bench in the Millennium Wood had been badly vandalised. “Officers from our Neighbourhood Policing Team have been in contact with members of the local community and will be increasing their patrols in the area to provide reassurance.

We will also be working with the local parish council to see how we can best support the family affected by this incident." The statement continued: “If you were in the Millennium Wood area, near the All Saints’ Church, any time between 10am and 4pm on Thursday 1 August and witnessed anything suspicious, please contact us on 101 and quote reference 5224201625.” But after the vandalism, the community came together in a big way, raising over £500 to repair the damage done to the beloved wood.

In just seven days, 34 donations totalling £535 were donated to the fundraiser, smashing the initial target of £500. If you'd like to make a donation, you can do so.
