Arts Club Theatre Company ’s Someone Like You is bringing its millennial twist on Cyrano de Bergerac to stages across the Lower Mainland. Touring from January 9 to February 9, 2025, local playwright Christine Quintana ’s charming play takes everything you love about classic rom-coms and filters it all through the lens of today’s Vancouver, complete with dating app disasters, latte art debates, and Main Street thrift store fashion. Someone Like You follows best friends Isabelle (Steffanie Davis) and Kirsten (Ivy Charles), who are navigating love and life in their East Van bubble.
When Isabelle takes her “wingman” duties for Kirsten’s rebound romance with Harjit (Praneet Akilla) a little too seriously, misunderstandings ensue, feelings flare, and both friendship and love are put to the test. Quintana describes Someone Like You as “your favourite vintage rom-com but without the fatphobia, racism, or homophobia.” Instead, this production shines a spotlight on the complexities of female friendship, the awkwardness of modern dating, and the unshakeable bond forged over years of growlers shared on Beer Island.
Expect plenty of local flair, from the recognizable East Van backdrops to subtle nods to Vancouver's quirks. Quintana’s script is steeped in the city’s unique vibe, mixing.
