A CAR park on the North Coast 500 has been branded "utterly depressing" after selfish visitors left it scattered with rubbish. Bins were left stuffed full of rubbish piling out of them, despite a note telling people not to overfill them. Large piles of litter were left scattered on the ground and a line of discarded packaging, tissues and even wine bottles was leading to a torn bin bag, several feet away from the bins. Locals were quick to lay the blame the vast number of motorhome tourists staying in the area overnight.

And they went as far as to say that disgraceful litter has become a regular occurrence every week, slamming the lack of bins in the area to cope with visitors. A post on the Facebook page NC500 The Land Weeps read: "Ullapool main car park this morning .

"Used nappies, toilet tissues. Rubbish bags left beside bins, ripped open, blown all over. All virtually at Tesco’s front door.

"Utterly depressing, yet it happens every weekend." Motorhomes have become a major issue for people living on the popular tourist route, often dubbed Scotland 's answer to Route 66. It receives thousands of visitors flocking to see the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands .

One of the biggest things getting visitors on the wrong side of local people is motorhomes dodging campsites and ignoring parking rules to camp up for free. Our reporter tackles the NC500 THE North Coast 500, dubbed Scotland's Route 66, is under the spotlight as locals express frustration over the influx of tourists along the rural route. While the scenic road trip brings economic benefits to the Highland region, residents are frequently irked by the trail of rubbish and damage to the roads caused by the surge in camper vans and mobile homes .

But tourists claim to respect the environment and the beauty of the route. As the debate rages on, it seems there's no easy resolution to the 'great escape' conundrum. Our Scottish Sun video reporter David Donaldson took to the road to uncover the truth about the tensions along the famous- but contested - route.

But local businesses were up in arms after the decision from Highland Council to allow campervans to use their car parks overnight. The new measure gives tourists access to a number of car parks on the popular route for just £40 a week.
