Less than two weeks from the season opener, the Utah State men’s basketball team continues to prepare for another run at a Mountain West Conference title. While repeating as league regular season champs is a goal, the daily grind of getting better each day is the top focus of first-year head coach Jerrod Calhoun and his staff. The Aggies beat Weber State in convincing fashion last Friday night in an exhibition game, 85-66.
This weekend USU will take on Oregon in a closed scrimmage. “We are going to keep working to get better,” Calhoun said. “We need to work on getting shots late in the shot clock and keep working on defense.
This isn’t football, we only have five guys out there and you have to get matched up. We will get better at it. We also need to rebound better.
We need to shoot better. There are a million things we can work on.” Before the season opener, there are some decisions that need to be made.
There were 13 Aggies on the 14-man roster that played against the Wildcats with 12 of them scoring. Sophomore forward Pavle Stosic did not see action as he was nursing an ankle injury. He could have played, but was held out as a precautionary way to get him back to 100 percent quicker.
However, playing all 14 athletes during a season is unlikely. That brings up the decision of who might redshirt. “We’ve got some figuring out to do with redshirts,” Calhoun said.
“I feel really comfortable playing 10. We’ve got to figure out what we are going to do with J.
