Steny Hoyer of Maryland suffered a mild ischemic stroke Sunday night, according to his office. “Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms.



He expects to resume his normal schedule next week,” spokesperson Margaret Mulkerrin said in a statement. The 85-year-old Democrat is running for reelection in November to represent Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, which stretches from Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties through Southern Maryland. The former House majority leader was first elected in 1981 and is seeking a 23rd term.

An ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke and occurs when the blood flow in a vein or artery in the brain is blocked or reduced, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center..
