Planning approvals in Glasgow are "returning to pre-pandemic levels", with development activity across the city on the rise, according to Glasgow City Council. In the year until the end of November, 14 applications categorised as ‘major’ were given the green light by the council, alongside a further 46 ‘significant local developments’. Major city centre developments approved in the past 12 months include the landmark Marks and Spencer building on Sauchiehall Street and The Ard – the former Portcullis House on India Street – which will be Glasgow’s tallest building.

The past 12 months have also seen the completion of several significant new city centre additions, including the JP Morgan HQ on Argyle Street and Candleriggs Square and the Social Hub on Trongate, which has been hailed as a turning-point development for the eastern end of the city centre. Meanwhile, Scottish Opera’s ambitious new headquarters at a site on the Forth and Clyde Canal were approved in November, while global fashion chain Uniqlo’s new store at the St Enoch Centre will be a welcome addition to the city centre. Plans for over 1000 homes on the Clyde at Yorkhill Quay were also approved.
