Night one of Coldplay's Australian tour got off to an unexpected start on Wednesday with one of the band members suffering a health emergency. Lead singer Chris Martin had bad news to deliver when he told fans bassist Guy Berryman wouldn't be performing with the group at Melbourne's Marvel Stadium after being struck down with an illness. During the concert the 47-year-old singer said the show would be "slightly different" and we'll do "our best" to make it amazing for all you beautiful people, he said.
"If you see some mistakes and problems, it's because we don't have our bass player. You won't see Guy tonight because he is vomiting," Martin said on stage. After the show finished the British band took to Instagram to thank fans for understanding.
"Tonight was the first time in our band's history that we've played a show without all four members onstage. Guy was taken ill unexpectedly just before the show. Thank you for carrying us through it," the band said.
During the first show Martin became emotional on stage when he paid tribute to his late friend Shane Warne. The singer reminisced about all the good times he had with the former Australian cricketer. He dedicated the song Sparks, with lyrics including "I promise you this, I’ll always look out for you," to the late king of spin.
"Let’s play this for Shane and his family," Martin said. "Our brother, we miss you. Every time we come to Melbourne, it used to be fun to hang out with Shane and all the Warne family.
