The new plans will see the beach returning for the first time since 2008. (Image: Getty) A seaside town often overlooked in favour of nearby Brighton and Eastbourne is set to get its beach back in plans to revitalise the area. Newhaven in Sussex was once a traditional seaside spot but suffered a major blow when its sandy beach , West Beach, was closed back in 2008 over safety concerns.

The town suffered further disappointment when plans to build what developers claimed would be one of world's biggest water parks were scrapped back in 2013. Before becoming the local Lib Dem MP, James MacCleary vowed to revitalise the once-bustling resort if elected. The plans currently include reopening its rare sandy beach to the public, along with various other projects catering to visitors.

Hopefully, we can do that in the coming years." A new splash park, play area, outdoor gym, and restaurant are also part of the plans, the outlet reports.

Corinne Day, programme director at Newhaven Enterprise Zone (NEZ), said: "As the town’s reputation as a hub for industry, marine, and creative businesses grows and it attracts more businesses to the commercial space it offers, having an updated town centre is just one of the factors that will build on its success as we look to transform Newhaven into a major contributor to the Sussex economy by 2030." In the meantime, several attractions and new additions to the town already make it worth a visit, including more than a dozen 15 massive murals commissioned as part of the June Look Again Supergraphics Festival, The Sun reports. Newhaven Fort, a coastal fortress built 150 years ago also offers stunning views of the town. Other big pulls for tourists include Castle Hill Nature Reserve with a great view from the top of the ramparts at Castle Hill, while Castle Hill Nature Reserve next door boasts a variety of flora and fauna. There are also several local pubs, including The Hope Inn and The Ark, both of which overlook the River Ouse, and a handful of B&Bs available and a Premier Inn hotel, the outlet reports.

Newhaven is just over an hour from London by train, with a change at Lewes. Newhaven also has great connections further afield, with a ferry service to Dieppe which takes about four hours..
