Friday, August 23, 2024 The UK braces for impact as Storm Lilian brings strong winds and heavy rain to the northern regions on Friday morning. The Met Office named the storm on Thursday, with gusts expected to reach up to 80mph, especially in northern England, Wales, and southern Scotland. Lilian moves northeast early on Friday, affecting northern England, Wales, and southern Scotland with powerful winds.

The Met Office issues yellow weather warnings, highlighting the potential for travel disruption, power cuts, and hazardous conditions near coastal areas. As the storm progresses, it moves into the North Sea by Friday morning, with winds gradually reducing and scattered showers following in most areas. However, further rain is likely to hit southern England by the end of the day.

Heavy rain and strong winds persist across northern parts of the UK as millions prepare for getaways during the August bank holiday weekend. The Met Office issues two new yellow weather warnings for rain in south-west Scotland and along the Aberdeenshire coast, effective from 9 pm on Thursday to 9 am on Friday. Additionally, a yellow wind warning covers northern England and north Wales, from 5 am to 11 am on Friday, with widespread gusts of 50-60mph expected.

These warnings follow severe weather that impacted large parts of Scotland and northern England on Wednesday. Two yellow wind warnings remain in place on Thursday morning, covering northern Wales and northern England, including Cumbria and Northumberland. Residents in the affected areas should prepare for potential travel disruptions and stay updated on the latest weather developments as Storm Lilian continues its course.
