The University of Houston-Victoria will commemorate the lives of those who have passed on in the Victoria community with their Dia de Muertos celebration, a festival of unity full of vibrant colors and rich cultural practices, on Saturday. The event is deeply connected to a large portion of the university’s student body. UHV is classified as a Hispanic-serving institution, a distinction attained by eligible colleges with an undergraduate Hispanic population of 25 percent or more.
The university’s Dia de Muertos will serve many of its students as well as a large quantity of community members. “I think this is a great way to highlight an event that is important to the Hispanic culture,” Jennifer Ortiz Garza, UHV director of development, said. “I know a large population of our community is Hispanic and recognizes the importance of families and remembering our loved ones who have gone on before us.
” From cultural performances to engaging activities, the Dia de Muertos celebration will have something to entertain every attendee. This includes the 25 vendors, featuring Casa de Luna, and food trucks set to provide the festival with an endless amount of excitement. The commemoration event will hold an ofrenda, or altar, competition to highlight local junior high school students in collaboration with Crossroads Art House, according to an article written by Duy Vu in UHV News.
