Two schools have backed their decision to consult on joining an academy trust despite pleas from the council to reconsider. West Hove Infant School and Hove Juniors are currently engaged in a four week consultation on plans to join the Aurora Multi Academy Trust (MAT). The two schools have worked closely together and even formed the Hove Learning Federation following a public consultation in 2021.
Yesterday, Brighton and Hove City Council urged the schools to reconsider the proposal. If the schools were to join the trust it would move them out of local authority control. Parents, carers and staff are being asked to comment on the proposals, which the council believes will lead to changes in some of the services families can access and the support systems for both schools.
The council’s view is that academisation will lead to greater fragmentation of the education system in the city and remove accountability to local communities and parents. A spokeswoman for the Hove Learning Federation said: “This is a well-considered decision and we believe this partnership is the best option for our schools' future success. “We are committed to maintaining our ethos and values, ensuring every child thrives academically and personally.
“The decision to explore joining an academy is driven by the need for long-term financial and operational sustainability in an increasingly challenging educational environment. “Joining Aurora will ensure the school’s future and continued excellen.
