KOTA KINABALU (Nov 15): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah has arrested two civil servants on suspicion of soliciting and accepting RM130,000 bribes from several contractors in return for maintenance and upgrade work of a school toilet in a district in Sabah. According to sources, both suspects, in their 50s, were detained between 7pm and 10pm yesterday after they gave their statements at the Sabah MACC office. One of the suspects was later brought to the Kota Kinabalu Magistrate’s Court where magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Gahzali issued a six-day remand order starting today.
The other suspect will be released on MACC bail after giving his statement. “Initial investigations revealed that the two suspects had requested 30 percent of the project value, which is about RM130,000, from several contractors in 2023. “They are suspected of receiving the bribe money from the contractors in cash in several payments,” said the sources.
MACC has also seized about RM90,000 in cash and confiscated two luxury vehicles purchased with the bribe money. Sabah MACC director Datuk S. Karunanithy confirmed the arrest of the two suspects.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009 and did not rule out the possibility of more arrests. He also called on contractors who have given bribe money to any civil servant to come forward and provide information to the MACC..
